Adaption of SAB Better Barley Standard for Small Holder Farmers

In 2012, South African Breweries (SAB) in collaboration with the WWF-South Africa started the “Better Barley, Better Beer” initiative focussed on assisting barley farmers to farm more sustainably. As part of this initiative a self-assessment guide was developed for commercial farmers to plan their own journey to sustainability. In 2013, SKA was contracted by SAB to assess and adapt this guide to make it applicable and accessible for 102 smallholder barley farmers who became part of the initiative. The process involved direct consultation with farmers as well as skills and knowledge transfer on sustainable development.
