  • SKA implemented a Fisheries Improvement Project in collaboration with WWF-SA. This project involved the value chain analysis and benchmarking of small scale fishery practises against the Fairtrade International Small Producer Organization and Trade Standards and the Marine Stewardship Council Standards to determine development needs for more sustainable practises and entering formal supply chains. To strengthen the capacity of the group and enable more independent implementation of the development actions as identified in the benchmarking, an Internal Control System for small scale fishers was developed. This enabled small scale fishers to manage fishery activities in a sustainable manner while at the same time guaranteeing quality products from a well-organized and transparent supply chain.
