07/11/2018Last week SKA provided support to GIZ E4D in the developing of a Monitoring & Evaluation plan and Baseline Study for the Moringa outgrowers project in Limpopo, in cooperation with Botanica Natural Products. The Moringa Oleifera tree, which has been growing in South Africa for more than 500 years, is the source of two natural products that are increasingly popular in the global cosmetics and health market.

24/10/2018Over the past year, Kruger, Swart & Associates has been involved in a working group exploring how to effectively communicate the possibility of agroecological approaches and practises for the regeneration of agriculture in the South African context. This work culminated in a workshop held in Johannesburg On Monday 22 October and supported by GIZ. The purpose of this workshop was to start the development of a strategic plan for this group. Marthane Swart co-facilitated this workshop with Scott Drimie from Southern Africa Foodlab. Watch this space for updates on the development of this exciting initiative.

16/10/2018On 16 October Sandra Kruger and Marthane Swart started a one-month amfori BSCI training programme. amfori BSCI is an international support programme supporting the sustainable development of businesses for the past 4 years. amfori BSCI offers an innovative and well-resourced solution for a variety of local based businesses. Sandra and Marthane will during the course of this programme introduce participants to the amfori BSCI programme and will continue to work with them over the coming years to assist the development of their businesses within this system.

15/10/2018From 9 – 11 October Marthane Swart visited Nuweland farm in Augrabies to work with them on preparation for their Fairtrade audit. An important part of this visit was two workshops. One workshop focussed on the Fairtrade Premium committee where training was done alongside discussion on how to move forward with their community projects. The second workshop focussed on sharing knowledge and experience with the Workers and Health and Safety Committees to enable them to participate in an active and meaningful manner in the Fairtrade audit.

15/10/2018This week SKA consultant Margot Slabbert is attending the two-day National Natural Ingredients Conference at the IDC in Sandton, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (Dti) in partnership with the Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI), an agency of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the Conference, Margot will be presenting on the Implications of CSR Buyer Requirements on SMEs.

09/10/2018This week our Consultant Suzanne Herbst is attending the Agri SA Annual Congress in Pretoria, on behalf of our client the South African Rooibos Council (SARC). We have been the secretariat of SARC since 2015 (http://www.skaa.co.za/…/south-african-rooibos-council-secr…/). The theme is year is “LAND: the key to shared prosperity in South Africa”. The Congress will discuss land from a variety of perspectives – examining local views, the international investor views as well as farmers opinions on this issue. Practical steps on agricultural funding and development will be also discussed, including the opportunities that exist from a farmer’s perspective.

23/08/2018The Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum (FPEF) employs a number of initiatives to bring about transformation in the fresh fruit export industry, such such as the FPEF Graduate Internship Programme. This Progamme, which has been a project of SKA since 2016, places high calibre graduates in junior commercial roles at various South African fruit export companies. This month the interns met for lunch and a networking opportunity at the Post Card Café in Stellenbosch.

09/07/2018The international wine buyers Vinmonopolet, Systembolaget and Alko (who are all amfori members) have increased their active involvement in the monitoring and development of farms in their South African supply chains. One of their initiatives is awareness raising and facilitation of dialogue with South African trade unions, to better equip union leadership and shop stewards to constructively participate in and engage with social standards, certifications and monitoring systems. Kruger, Swart & Associates has developed learning material for and is implementing a series of workshops to support this initiative.
